Bayern Munich Crashes Out Of Champions League After Controversial Refereeing Decisions

Bayern Munich crashes out of Champions League after controversial refereeing decisions

'It was a deliberate decision,' says an agitated Thomas Tuchel after the match

Real Madrid's Joselu scores a late brace to seal Bayern's fate

FC Bayern Munich's Champions League dreams were shattered on Wednesday night after a controversial 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the semi-final second leg. Bayern were left fuming after referee Cüneyt Çakır awarded Real a late penalty, which Karim Benzema converted to give the Spanish giants a 2-1 win on the night and a 3-2 aggregate victory.

"It was a deliberate decision," said an agitated Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel after the match. "The referee knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted Real Madrid to win." Bayern's players were equally furious, with captain Manuel Neuer saying that the referee had "ruined the game."

The match was a thrilling encounter from start to finish, with both teams creating chances. Bayern took the lead in the first half through Robert Lewandowski, but Real Madrid equalised through Marcelo just before half-time. The game remained level until the 83rd minute, when Çakır awarded Real a penalty for a handball by Arturo Vidal. Benzema converted the spot-kick to give Real the lead, and Joselu added a second in stoppage time to seal Bayern's fate.

The defeat is a major blow for Bayern, who were looking to win the Champions League for the sixth time. It is also a disappointing end to the season for Tuchel, who has been in charge of Bayern for just over a year.
